IOM Dominican Republic improves response mechanisms in border provinces

Jimaní. The International Organization for Migration in the Dominican Republic is supporting a simulation program to improve response mechanisms in emergencies at the various border checkpoints between the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

The methodology involves an exercise requiring evaluation of coordination components, decision-making, communication flow, data assessment, and completing check lists in case of emergencies.

Over 600 migrants receive counselling at the first IOM ’supported Information Center in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo - Since its opening in October 2019, the Migration Information Hub located in the offices of the General Directorate of Migration in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, has served over 600 migrants, 90% of them from Haiti, interested in receiving information on renewing or changing their migration status.

Labor migration management efforts in the region redoubled with new IOM-ILO agreement

On December 11, 2019 Marcelo Pisani, the director of IOM for North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, and Carmen Muñoz, the director of ILO Office for Central America, Haiti, Panama and the Dominican Republic, signed a collaboration agreement between their two United Nations agencies in order to continue with a wide range of joint actions on labor migration.

The IADB and IOM offer specialized virtual courses on migration governance and management

A partnership between the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), within the frameworks of the IABD's Migration Initiative and IOM’s Regional Migration Capacity-Building Program, will enable officials in Latin America and the Caribbean to complete free virtual trainings on topics related to migration governance and management and earn certificates.

The countries of the Regional Coalition against Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling (CORETT) identified over 1,300 victims of human trafficking in 2018

The plenary meeting of the Regional Coalition against Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling (CORETT) was held November 19-21 in the Dominican Republic, with participation from representatives of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Belize, and the Dominican Republic.

Counter Trafficking in Persons (CTiP) in Humanitarian Settings

Humanitarian crises may exacerbate pre-existing trafficking trends and give rise to new ones. This course is designed for humanitarian personnel and government actors in a top-down and bottom-up approache to understand human trafficking, identify and assist victims of trafficking, prevent trends from worsening, and integrate CTiP activities before, during, and after an emergency response.
