On September 18, IOM facilitated a virtual meeting to exchange experiences on mechanisms for the protection of migrant children and adolescents between Belize and El Salvador. Representatives from both countries participated in the meeting to identify coordination points for the identification, protection and assistance of migrant children and adolescents.
On September 23, a multilateral table sponsored by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) brought together 48 people from Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. They participated in a dialogue and exchange of experiences on the protection of the rights of migrant workers in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
More than 100 participants logged on to each of the four sessions that gathered the Regional Conference on Migration’s (RCM) countries to discuss migrant smuggling and exchange best practices on the subject. The main goal was to strengthen police and judiciary capacities to fight migrant smuggling, with especial emphasis on investigation techniques and cross-border cooperation.
August 27, Georgetown - The International Organization for Migration (IOM) recently completed its training workshop Reception and Reintegration of Forced Returnees in the Caribbean. The trainings were held online and in collaboration with the Caribbean Community Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (CARICOM IMPACS) and the Government of Antigua and Barbuda.
On September 2, the cycle of videoconferences "Labor migration in the face of the challenge of economic recovery: contributions from the public sector and businesses" concluded, bringing together the public and private sectors of the countries of the Regional Conference on Migration (RCM) to discuss future prospects. The activity was organized by the RCM and the International Organization of Employers (IOE) with the support of the United Nations (IOM, UNDP and ILO).
San José - 57% of those who intend to migrate decided to postpone or cancel their plans due to the pandemic, while 21% of those who already migrated are contemplating returning to their country of origin as soon as their economic conditions or the countries' migration and health measures allow them to do so. The new Training Programe on Migration Policies, facilitated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), seeks to strengthen the capacities of public officials of the Regional Conference on Migration (RCM) in the design, implementation and evaluation of public policies on migration . The Program consists of an IOM online course, Migration Trends in Latin America, a panel with international experts and three virtual sessions for technical exchange on migration policies.
Ante los retos planteados por la pandemia del COVID-19, la OIM desarrolló una serie de entrenamientos al personal de las ventanillas informativas sobre migración para adaptar sus servicios de atención a personas migrantes a la virtualidad. Lo anterior, en base a una breve guía práctica publicada para estos efectos por la OIM, que viene a complementar el manual ya existente sobre las ventanillas.
The first graduating class of the Diploma on Migration Management has started its third specialized course, entitled "Migration Governance and Policies". This is part of an ambitious training project developed by IOM in conjunction with Galen University, in which 67 people have participated since the introductory course in 2018.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in coordination with the Belize Anti-Trafficking Council facilitated training on human trafficking for key personnel in the tourism sector. Human trafficking networks often use the infrastructure and facilities of the tourism industry to commit this crime, so awareness and training of the sector is key.
