The Government of Canada’s Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) has partnered with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to deter prospective migrants in Central America from using irregular migration pathways, directing those interested to regular pathways, while also increasing cooperation with local stakeholders in responding to migration challenges in the region.

Santo Domingo. On September 26, a first meeting was held with over 50 civil society organizations to provide orientation on the processes and requirements for the renewal, change of status, and expedition of migration documents for beneficiaries of the National Plan for the Regularization of Foreign Nationals (PNRE) in the Dominican Republic. The activity was organized by the National School of Migration (ENM) with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

During the month of September, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and its partners in different countries of the region met with various actors with the goal of discussing labor migration management for the benefit of all sectors.

In conjunction with the Central American Federation of Agricultural and Agro-industrial Chambers (FECAGRO), IOM has begun developing a proposal to create a regional coordination mechanism for labor migration management in the agricultural sector in Central America and the Dominican Republic.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) are leading the regional workshop “Governance of Labor Migration: Fair Hiring and Prevention of Fraudulent Practices”. The event, which was inaugurated today in Guatemala City and will end on Thursday, September 5, takes place within the Regional Conference on Migration (RCM).

Technological advances have helped develop many tools to make our daily activities easier. Learning is no exception! The possibility of remote learning – or e-learning – has made more education opportunities possible for many more people around the world through the use of digital platforms.

IOM’s migration learning platform, E-Campus, has released a new English-language course addressing the fundamentals of trafficking in persons. The 3-hour course, “Trafficking in Persons: protection and assistance to victims”, provides a certification for English-speaking users.  

The Caribbean region faces an increasingly complex mixed migration phenomenon including asylum seekers, refugees, stateless people, and vulnerable migrants. It is a region of destination and transit for thousands of people, including people needing international protection, each year. 

Port of Spain - The growing frequency and intensity of tropical storms and other disasters have pushed Caribbean countries to recognize they can't keep climate change on a debate level. Eighteen countries and territories of this region and twelve international and regional organizations, as well as observers, gathered during June 6 and 7 to tackle issues on human mobility in the context of disasters and climate change in the Caribbean.

Mexico City. Representatives of the Regional Conference on Migration (RCM), composed of the governments of Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and the United States of America, met on 4 and 5 June for a follow-up workshop to the 2019-2025 Work Plan on  Migrant Smuggling, prepared jointly and approved by vice ministers in 2018.   

At the LIII Ordinary Meeting of Heads of State of the Central American Integration System (SICA), held on 4 and 5 June in Guatemala, the General Secretariat of SICA presented the executive summary of a regional study on the causes and consequences of migration, developed by IOM with the support of UNHCR.
